Abstract

"Algorithmic Thinking and Programming" is one of the digital competencies embedded in all educational programmes at HSE University (hereinafter, the Programming competency). It encompasses skills ranging from the formal specification of problems and the design of solution algorithms to the use of modern programming tools at an appropriate level. For each undergraduate field of study, the educational standard specifies the minimum required level of proficiency in this digital competency: introductory, basic, or advanced. The Independent Examination in Programming is a mandatory component of the curriculum for all undergraduate programmes. Its purpose is to confirm that students have attained the minimum level of competency required by their programme. Assessment takes place after students have completed the courses designed to develop the relevant level of competency. This examination assesses Programming competency at the introductory level. The Independent Examination is administered as an automatically graded test. It is taken remotely using proctoring technologies and procedures. The final result is converted to a 10-point grading scale. Scores below 4 are rounded down to the nearest whole number; scores of 4 or above are rounded to the nearest whole number. Failure to obtain a passing result in the Independent Examination in Programming by the prescribed deadline constitutes academic failure.
