Kingship in Political Views of Hincmar of Reims (872 –882)

This research is devoted to consideration of kingship in political thought of Hincmar, archbishop of Rheims and one of the most important counselors of West Carolingians. The article is based on the analysis of his writings “De regis persona et regio ministerio” (872-3), “Instructio ad Ludovicum Balbum” (878), “De institutione regia” (881) and “De ordine palatii”, which were written as admonitions to Frankish kings. Futhermore, the Annals of St. Bertin were used in this research. which was written for the king of Western Frankish Kingdom, Karloman II, as an instruction for administration of court and kingdom. Admonitions show , how Hincmar defined the title of the King, which qualities he should have had, and which specific functions he had.During the investigation Hincmar’s views on royal authority, his reception of king’s image were defined. Also the interrelation between royal politics and Hincmar’s views were revealed.
