This paper is devoted to the analysis of the key topics in Isaak Babel's debut short novels, published in the journal "Letopis'" in November 1916. This work describes the development of the Jewish issue and of the issue concerning women's situation and their destiny in Rusian empire, adressed in Babel's short novels and all the publications of the journal in 1916. The ultimate goal of this paper is to identify the position of the journal towards these issues, as well as to analyse how this position is reflected in Babel's short novels. As a result, it was stated that the materials, published in "Letopis'", complement and explain the hints on certain social phenomena, which Babel' leaves in his short novels, while these novels widen the social problematics of the journal.
