Postgraduate Studies in Modern Russia: Motivation to Study and Barriers for Thesis Defense

The research is devoted to identify the barriers to the thesis defense as well as factors that contribute to overcome them including the motivation of graduate studies. Moreover, there are examined possible models for the postgraduate program development. The results of the study are based on qualitative analysis of interviews with both former and graduate students, heads of graduate programs and advisors. The interviews were analyzed with the power of grounded theory. The analysis helped to analyze the problem from different points of view and formulate possible ways of improving graduate school in Russia.

The full text of a thesis can be published in open access on the HSE website only if the authoring student (copyright holder) agrees, or, if the thesis was written by a team of students, if all the co-authors (copyright holders) agree. After a thesis is published on the HSE website, it obtains the status of an online publication.

Student theses are objects of copyright and their use is subject to limitations in accordance with the Russian Federation’s law on intellectual property.
