In this paper, the author analyzes the Stolbovsky peace treaty as not just a document, but a stage in the relations between Muscovy and Sweden. Considering the situation in the border areas from the perspective of social history, the author examines the process of forming an ambiguous image of the border in people's minds. The author also tries to understand how the process of mutual influence between the authorities and the border population proceeded.
