Representation of Romanovs' History in Russian TV Documentaries of 2000-2013

The purpose of the research is to define how popular historical narrative in Russian TV documentaries about the Romanovs’ history is being formed and used in the process of legitimization of the image of modern authority. The author outlines key directions of historical politics in modern Russia and investigates the panorama of the Romanovs’ history in modern Russian media. The main focus is made on TV on projects of 2013, the year of the Romanovs’ 400th anniversary. The author considers the TV project “The Romanovs” (2013, Star Media) as the most representative for revealing current strategies of historical representation of the Romanovs’ history in Russia. The historical documentary project is examined under the influence of historical politics, role of the media platform and the audience’s reception. The analysis of the documents, narrative analysis, the analysis of audiovisual design, the analysis reception confirm a hypothesis that the project becomes popular because it fulfills the ideological framework of historical politics and the expectations of the audience, using modern tools of technical audiovisual representation and providing the information in “positively-emotional” way. The Romanovs’ are empowered with the features of modern authorities, creates the effect of “historical continuity” in modern Russia.
