The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf - the Region’s Past or Future?

The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf is one of the key regional organizations in the world. Its policy and decisions have a considerable impact on both the Gulf region and the whole Middle East. However, the future of Arabian integration is not clear due to certain reasons, mainly because of the tensions inside the GCC and diverse economic and foreign policy of six monarchies. This study examines internal and external performance of the Council, its efficiency and divisions between its members. The author investigates main obstacles to cooperation in the GCC, considers possible ways of resolving existing controversies and explores promising directions for the development of partnership. Key words: GCC, the Persian Gulf, Arabian monarchies, regional organization, integration, cooperation.
