Fear and Anxiety as a Part of Women’s Spatial Stories in the City

Student: Bagina Yana

Supervisor: Oksana Zaporozhets

Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Sociology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2017

In the current study women’s spatial stories are regarded as processes of movement including bodily, sensual and emotional experience. The general purpose is to figure out the particular qualities (throwntogetherness) of places which trigger anxiety and fear of male violence. The analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with young women. Places where women feel anxious or fearful are considered as dynamic combinations of built environment and humans which constitute local gender orders. There is also an attempt to draw the line between spatial expressions of anxiety and fear.
