Fathers' Role in Parental Expertise Formation

Student: Artemeva Nina

Supervisor: Andrey Kozhanov

Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Sociology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2017

The purpose of this work was to identify the parents' perception of the fathers’ role in the formation of an "expert-based" position on various issues, for which 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted both with the fathers and mothers. The analysis of the obtained data showed that there are meanings put by both parents in the male role within the framework of parental practices: financial, functional and emotional control, as well as responsibility for the sports and entertainment spheres. Fathers note the importance of their opinion in the adoption of family decisions relating to the child, despite the smaller contribution to the process of selecting and evaluating information for the formation of a subsequent "parental examination". The opinion of the fathers is significant for mothers, but in case of divergence of views they make decisions at their own discretion.
