Even though Quebec and Scotland have been parts of sovereign states for a long time, many governmental, economic, social and cultural discrepancies between them remained. Canadian Federation and Spain use decentralization to release tensions within the country, however nationalists are still unsatisfied with the amount of power they get. The aim of the work is to analyze the most recent data on the subject, compare and contrast Basque Country and Quebec cases. Other states, which face the challenge of secessionism, may create scenarios for their own future and forecast possible implications of Canadian and Spanish policy in them. The future vision of national self-determination of Quebec and Basque Country might be influenced by a greater level of decentralization. Key Words: federalism, secessionism, nationalism, Basque Country, Quebec
