Educational Programme: History (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2017

This study focuses on the Byzantine Empire, this is a new direction in byzantinistik studies, which now pays a lot of attention. Despite the small number of works devoted to this problem, the literary heritage of Byzantium is a huge material for a survey. To address the issue raised by me in this study, I take the world chronicles of the middle Byzantine period. In this period, there is a noticeable growth of interest in chronicle works. The religious policy of Justinian is a material extremely interesting to explore. Orthodox chroniclers could have its position relative to that period, as the Emperor was quite active in the religious field. Moreover, after the Fifth Ecumenical Council, the policy of the Emperor becomes ambivalent to the monophysites, which is a research interest too. The professional significance lies in the new methodological approach, because of the historical literature of Byzantium in 9th-12th centuries, practically not subjected to such (historical memory) analysis.
