Women's Family Position in the Petrine Era: Analyses of Divorce Cases from the Synod Archive

The transformations in the Petrine era concerning the women’s status in the family are met with a positive evaluation in Russian and foreign historiography. The implementation of the Petrine reforms in practice was reflected in the divorce materials of the Synod archive. The present study is devoted to the analysis of the situation of women in the Petrine era on the materials of the divorce cases of the 796 fund from Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA) - the Synod Chancellery. Classification of cases on occasions to divorce allowed to find out their causes, legality and prevalence. There are fourteen cases considered in the work: eleven cases refer to the processes of untitled persons, and three are the famous processes of the Petrine era. Most cases of untitled persons are considered for the first time.
