Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2017

A movement of the national traditions’ revival that is Scottish Renaissance is considered to be one of the most important pages in modern Scottish literary history. It is obvious, though, that while male authors and their creations are quite popular as a topic for investigation among scientists specializing in Scottish literature, female writers’ contribution is still underappreciated and appears to be a blank spot in this field. Following the contemporary tendency of filling such lacunas in, this project is going to become the first to introduce one of the most important epoch’s female writers, Nan Shepherd, into the scholarly field. An examination of her prosaic works in the context of regional and gender modernisms will also be followed by a deep analysis of recurrent devices and elements of literary space in “The Grampian Quartet”, revealing basic systems, which regulate its organization and operation in the novels.
