In this investigation I am trying to reveal the features of Russian cultural elite's representation of gypsies, using the fiction literature as a historical source. My work is chronologically framed by the second half of 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century. The image of gypsies is regarded in my research as the example of "the Other's image". This image in my historical sources has many positive characteristics, but it is often more symbolic than realistic.
