Health or Wealth? Economic Crisis and Physical Activity

This study analyses the influence of economic situation in the country on people healthy lifestyle, in particular, the level of physical activity. The first part of the work is a review of academic literature and the methods used by researchers conducting similar studies. The empirical part of the study was carried out on the panel data for adults from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS), years 2000-2015. As the result of the analysis two hypotheses were verified. It was shown that, during the economic crisis, people incline to a more active lifestyle and exercise. The hypothesis of a direct link between individual’s income and level of physical activity was also confirmed.
