The research paper contains analysis of the topic of protection of public figures' reputation. It is focused on the correlation of the appropriate forms of polite criticism and freedom of expression of mass-media sources. The author analyses libel cases and right to hold a good name by public figures. The research is relevant as far as the law enforcement practice has not determined the status of public figures yet. Debates on the topic of public figures do not cease in the academic legal society. Courts have been looking for the balance between the right to freedom of expression and the right to private life, in particular, to the protection of reputation, for more than 60 years. The author conducts a comparative analysis of American, German, and Russian court practice along with the analysis of the European Court of Human Rights practice.
