A Glance at the Russian Food Embargo Through the Prism of Open Customer Data

The study analyzes open data of the Russian Customs Service, with specific focus on the data on import of pork meat, to detail influence of the counter-sanctions by the Russian State on food imports from the EU. The novelty of the study is to take a deeper look, with the help of available 2017 data of import movements, at pork meat imports to Russia. The final objective is to identify key trends in pork meat imports and creation of an example of data journalism article. The study evaluates a hypothesis that food sanctions forced to look for new ways to fill emptied market share by, namely, increasing imports from other countries and to close the gap in the Russian regions that relied most on the EU imports of pork meat. Results of the study are presented as an article with extended commentary.
