Regional policy has existed within the Italian state since its formation and endeavors on overcoming the economic inequality between Northern and Southern regions (the latter is often called as Mezzogiorno) undertaken within the 20th centuries by national government did not result in final elimination of the backwardness of South. In this paper we aim to investigate the activities executed by the EU within the framework of Cohesion policy in order to draw certain comprehension of what influence the supranational entity executes on the development of Mezzogiorno. Apart from that, special attention within the thesis is paid to the impediments hindering the successfulness of Cohesion policy as well as recommendations on dealing with the obstacles under consideration.
