This paper explores the relationship between Russian economic elites and the Russian government between 2000 and 2018 with a special focus on the concept of adekvatnost’ devised by Schimpfossel and Yabloko (2017). The author considers how billionaire businessmen in the oil, gas and metallurgical sectors are motivated to perform certain acts of Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate State Responsibility by the Russian State. In doing so, the paper looks at how business’ understanding of adekvatnost’ is informed by the State through formal and informal channels, and at the precedents which permit businessmen to predict the State’s future actions,. To complete the picture, the author discusses the reasoning that drives the involvement of both parties in the solicitation and performance of duties of Corporate Responsibility.
