Year of Graduation: 2018

Pedestrian spaces such as streets, parks, squares and embankments were researched in this work. The main goal was to establish their importance in a city structure. The key objectives were investigating historical development of pedestrian spaces, their value in architecture and urbanism and at last, learn about design experience of such spaces in different countries. Methods such as studying literature on the subject (articles, books and magazines), visual comparison of implemented projects were used in this research. As a result, a large number of most successful projects were put together in one source, letting compare and state their impact on the surrounding environment and people living in it. Based on the accomplished research it was concluded that pedestrian spaces carry a great significance in a city structure and attract city-dwellers. It is important to create an elaborate net of pedestrian zones, increasing pedestrian walk duration and connecting more and more city areas, as this helps reduce most-visited city-sights overload and develops suburban districts. Creating a better pedestrian infrastructure is the key instrument in consolidating cities.
