The purpose of this work is to study the phenomenon of informal employment, and in particular the informal labor market in Russia, separately for the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as abroad. Within the framework of this goal, the analysis of the dynamics of informal employment was carried out, the causes and significant factors in determining informal employment were identified. In addition, an econometric analysis of factors influencing the ownership of the informal sector was conducted; the relationship between them and the degree of participation is defined. Based on the results of the work, it was revealed that informal employment affects both positive and negative aspects. On the one hand, this type of employment does not give any labor guarantees, but it helps to fight unemployment both in Russia and abroad. In addition, there are a number of countries where the informal sector is made up of 90% of the able-bodied population. If we talk about Russia, this figure does not reach more than a quarter. Empirical analysis showed that in the informal sector mainly middle-aged men with secondary education work. It should be noted that citizens from rural settlements and with a small amount of work experience are most vulnerable to informal employment.
