Social Media Communications of Russian State Deputies via Twitter

Nowadays social media sites are widely used by politicians in Russia. However, theoretical and empirical understanding of how and why they are utilised is still limited. To fill this gap, this study examines the political communication of the State Duma members on Twitter. To accomplish research aim, such methods as frequency analysis, contingency analysis and content analysis were employed. The results show that deputies use Twitter primarily for spreading of information and one-way communication. Although Twitter provides opportunities for two-way communication, the level of interaction of deputies with constituency is low and exhibits a downward trend.
