Linguostylistic and Thematic Peculiarities of the Chicklit Genre

This graduation paper is devoted to the study of linguostylistic and thematic peculiarities of the chicklit genre. The object of study of this graduation paper is modern female prose, or chicklit. The subject matter of this study is linguostylistic and thematic peculiarities of the chicklit genre. The aim of this graduation thesis is to define linguostylistic and thematic peculiarities of works written by the authors of the chicklit genre. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to solve the following tasks: 1) To study the development of the chicklit genre; 2) To define main features of this literary phenomenon; 3) To study thematic peculiarities of the novels written by modern chicklit authors; 4) To study linguostylistic peculariaties of chicklit on the different language levels: phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactical levels. The main methods of this thesis are: Contextual analysis , Generalization and classification, Linguistic observation Theoretical basis of research consists of the works of such famous Russian linguists as M.L. Boloneva, O.V. Bocharova, Y.V. Vetoshkina, I.R. Galperin, G.N.Sklyarevskaya and others. The research material consists of famous English, Irish and American literature: Helen Fielding «Bridget Jones’s Diary» , Marian Keyes «Last Chance Saloon» , Lauren Weisberger «The Devil Wears Prada» . In the course of the study we considered such thematic peculiarities of the chicklit genre as formula of the genre which is represented by the combination of traditional fairy-tale with postfeminist literature and intertextuality in the form of references to characters of early literature. The next stage of our research was the analysis of main linguostylistic peculiarities of the chicklit genre . The study revealed that graphic devices are predominantly used on the phonographic level and tropes prevail on the linguistic level. Special attention is given to the functioning of brand names in the novels.
