Spatial-Conceptual Mapping in Representations of Time and Number

In our everyday life we tend to refer to two types of concepts, concrete and abstract. When concrete concepts can be properly perceived and described, to describe abstract concepts we need to refer to specific, concrete information. One such example is conceptualizing information that has magnitude features (e.g. time and number) through space. The current Master's thesis investigates how both number and time are processed with relation to space when presented together, or co-represented, and whether or not this processing is amodal. We conducted an eye-tracking experiment on a Russian-speaking sample of subjects and found out that stimuli consisting of both time and number information tend to be fixated and gazed upon faster when their magnitudes are congruent. The current work provides a great topic of discussion on amodality of magnitude information processing and its engagement of top-down attentional processes.
