Классически в западной психологической литературе, в основном, понятие личностного расстройства рассматривается в когнитивной парадигме с ее акцентом на мыслительных схемах и психоаналитической парадигме, в которой бессознательному и защитным личностным механизмам уделяется главенствующая роль в психодиагностике и описании. Однако помимо вышеуказанных направлений есть еще целый блок методов гуманистических, личностно-ориентированных: экзистенциальный анализ и человек-центрированный подход, которые также разрабатывают свои модели описания личностных расстройств.
