Housewife Gender Contract: A Diversity of Practices and Legitimations

This work aimed at identifying the motivations and reasons for adopting a traditional gender contract within a family by women with a higher education in modern Russian society. The empirical database consisted of 18 interviews of non-working women with higher education from 25 to 46 years old, consisting in a registered or a civil marriage, having at least one child over 3 years old, living in Moscow.  As part of the analysis of the empirical data collected by us, the types of reasons for leaving women to work and gaining the status of "housewife" were identified. Also, the reasons for the internal legitimization of women housewives and the pros and cons of their situation.
