Google Trends: Estimation of Macroeconomic Indicators

This research discusses the possibility of using data from Google Trends search queries to predict aggregated macroeconomic indicators using inflation as an example. By comparing the search trends with the monthly dynamics of real economic indicators for some countries, significant online indicators of inflation expectations were found. Also, an improved procedure for such studies using Google Correlate for the selection of search terms has been proposed.
