The Evolution of the Relations between Catalonia and the European Union in the Context of the Crisis in 2017-2018

On October 1, 2017, the Catalan separatists held a referendum on independence, which was illegal in terms of the Spanish constitution. Although Spain used force to prevent this vote, the European Union practically ignored the violence and did nothing to stop it. This paper analyzes how the relationship between the EU and Catalonia have changed after the referendum. In addition, the author examines the causes of the Catalan crisis, the problem of separatism under international law and make a forecast of further relations between the EU and Catalonia in the short run.
