The Chinese in Africa: A Comparative Analysis of Djibouti and Kenya under the Beijing Consensus in the Post 1990s

Over the decades, the consistent expansion of China’s dominance and engagement on the African continent through the Beijing Consensus has remained an overarching issue that has created a debate among different scholarships. It has also become a burning issue among policymakers and deciders at the state, regional and system level. This research focuses on the effect of the oversea Chinese infrastructural development initiatives on the Gross Domestic Product of Djibouti and Kenya in the comparative perspective. The study used Karl Pearson’s Method of Correlation Coefficient to analyze the degree of influence that the Chinese loans and FDIs (which is the primary resources for embarking on infrastructural development in Africa) on the Gross Domestic Products of the aforementioned crucial case studies. The study revealed certain predictive factors such as corruption, mis-prioritization, exploitation, profiteering, political insecurity, and policy incapacity are major stoppage to the positive effect of China’s Loans and FDIs on Gross Domestic Products of Djibouti and Kenya. Such predictors were discussed with the help of expert’s opinions as well as already existing scholarly literature. Based on the findings of the research, both Djibouti and Kenya must undergo a domestic administrative and policy reformation and must also revise the engagement with China to experience the aforementioned positive effect on their respective national Gross Domestic Products.
