Political Stability in Tribal Societies: Comparative Analysis of Libya and Botswana

Student: Khalluf Amal

Supervisor: Ilya Lokshin

Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Political Science (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2019

As of now, the role of tribes in maintaining political stability has not been sufficiently studied. In the research we conduct a comparative analysis of the stabilizing functions of tribal structures within Gaddafi and Botswana cases. The hypothesis tested in the research is as follows: tribal structures perform such stabilizing functions as co-optation of the population and tribal elites; minimizing the threat of collective action against the government; legitimation of the regime; as well as decreasing the stakes in the political competition.
