Effort - Reward Relationships: Testing the Tournament Theory in E-sports

Student: Kochurov Konstantin

Educational Programme: Economics (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 9

Year of Graduation: 2019

This study tests the tournament theory, which was presented, by Lazear and Rosen in 1981, in the context of e-sports. In particular, the data contains the results of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournaments, which have been held during the period from 2011 to 2018. Seven multiple regressions were estimated depending on the type of e-sports tournament. Afterwards hypotheses were tested in order to test the tournament theory. As a result, the theory was completely confirmed in the case of LAN tournaments only. As for the other types, the theory was partially confirmed, since the prize spreads in the final stages of tournaments do not increase. In addition, three models with interaction effects were estimated in order to consider how the prize spreads vary depending on the type of the e-sports tournament.
