Servicemen in the Era of Crisis: Prosopographical Study of the Servicemen in the Besieged Smolensk and the Camp of Sigismund III in 1609-1611

This paper is dedicated to the Russian servicemen while the Time of Troubles (1598 – 1613), one of the most tragic and devastating period of the Russian history, specifically, one of its key events – the siege of Smolensk by Polish-Lithuanian forces in 1609-1611. The research is aimed to identify some key features of their residence inside the besieged town and in the camp of invaders. The purpose of the research is to find out the features of daily life and service in besieged Smolensk, objectives and duties servicemen carried out, their political position during the siege. Also, this work examines the part of Smolensk servicemen, which swore to Sigismund III, including deserters from besieged Smolenk and servicemen, which were away from Smolensk, fighting against the forces of False Dmitry II and being in Moscow.
