This work is focused on studying modern Chinese art during the period of the late XX century. At that time its development was characterized by the flourishing of different artistic movements which were formed under the influence of Western art principles. The study is aimed to identify the extent of Western influence in the works of contemporary Chinese artists, as well as to observe the original stylistic peculiarities that characterize these paintings. The research shows a substantial amount of borrowings from Western painting tradition in the works of modern Chinese artists. However, contemporary Chinese art still managed to preserve its specific features. Besides, the ideas expressed by using these foreign styles and techniques are unique in the context of China’s sociopolitical development in the considered historical period.
