The present work is focused on the issues arising in the process of personal data processing carried out in connection with ensuring a certain public interest by the operator. The purpose of the present work is revealing of specificity of processing of the personal data which is carried out in public interests for what the author by means of the comparative legal analysis of provisions of the Federal law "On personal data" and GDPR allocate and consider the similarities and the distinctions concerning stated in the specified acts: - principles of personal data processing; - conditions and grounds for the processing of personal data; - rights of personal data subjects, which they have in relation to the processing of their personal data, and also influence of current legal regulation on observance of the rights of subjects of the personal data in the specified legal systems. For achievement of the set goal the author, in particular, gives definition and classification of "public interest" for the purposes of personal data processing, after which the following conditions of personal data processing are analyzed: performance of powers of public authorities; achievement of socially significant goals; professional activity of the journalist and (or) legal activity of mass media; processing of personal data in statistical or other research purposes. Based on the research results, the author identifies problems existing in the Russian legal regulation of relations on personal data processing, and develops recommendations to improve the current legal regulation.
