South Korean Entertainment Industry in the English Speaking Media: the Image of The Big Four

The Korean Wave gains more attention among the fans of popular culture around the world in the past five years, but little is known about those behind it. The purpose of this paper is to study the presence of South Korean entertainment companies in the English-speaking mediascape and to identify their perception by consumers of K-pop content. SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and Big Hit Entertainment were selected for the study, along with their founders Lee Sooman, Yang Hyunsuk, Park Jinyoung, and Bang Sihyuk. The empirical basis of the study is data about these companies and their founders collected on the Factiva, as well as 199 articles and 788 user comments from the website about Korean popular culture AllKpop.
