Taiwan-US-China Relations in the Trump Era

Over the past two decades, China has become the second largest economy in the world, and has been energetically building up its military power. The increase in Chinese power has led to more conflicting relations with the current hegemon - the United States. Therefore, after Donald Trump took office, the US policy towards China became more stringent. In the military and geopolitical spheres, Trump proposed the Indo-Pacific Strategy to contain the expansion of Chinese power; In the economic sphere, Trump launched an external trade war with China to solve the problems of unfair trade between China and the United States. In this case, the importance of Taiwan has gradually grown. In recent years, relations between China and Taiwan have deteriorated sharply. However, in the meantime, the United States, led by Trump, comprehensively improved its relations with Taiwan and regarded it as a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region. This article analyzes the transformation of trilateral relations between the United States, China and Taiwan, and the causes by means of Offensive realism.
