The modern approach to urban improvement considers the historical environment as an important step for preserving historical values. This is also important for residents of cities that are facing a big problem of the XXI century-the preservation of their local identity in the era of urbanization. Сorrect work with the context, as well as identifying the uniqueness of the territory through history, will help build a closer relationship between residents and the city, as well as increase tourist flows and economic effects of the area. In this study, the author considered ways to preserve identity on the example of modern public spaces of historical cities in Europe. The work is divided into two parts: marking lost architectural monuments and creating a context for the preserved ones. Each of the parts shows how to work under different environmental conditions.
