The paper is devoted to the study of such an urgent issue as the perception of Japan in the late USSR (in the period 1960s-1980s). The relevance is confirmed by a small number of scientific papers both in Russian and in English, covering this historical period. As the main material for analysis the author chose such books of the soviet journalists as “Sakura twig” and “The fifteenth stone of Reanji garden”. To construct the most detailed image of Japan, several areas of society were examined: economics, culture and politics. Moreover, comparative analysis of the above-mentioned works was carried out. As a result of the study, it might be concluded how Japan was perceived in the USSR and what information about this country could be obtained through the notes of journalists.
