Despite the prosperity in developed countries at the beginning of the XXI century, the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 led to a decrease of the economic growth rate and made some social and economic problems more evident. Thus, France had one of the deepest recessions since the Second World War, contributing to a disparity of departmental and regional development. The existence of deep regional inequalities makes difficult to carry out efficient policy of socio-economic reforms, to form domestic market, exacerbates economic crisis and raises society’s differentiation. The aim of this study is to analyze socio-economic development of France and search new approaches to the formation of its regional policy. The findings may be used in academic research to clarify the specific characteristics of French regions, identify the strategies that can mobilize the regional economy and consider the issues of trends of economic development of the country.
