This paper reviews the problem of complex correlation between South Korean economic development and both foreign and domestic multinational enterprises’ (MNEs) economic activity. Based on the Investment development path (IDP) hypothesis which explains the interdependence between gross national income (GNI) growth and a net outward investment position (NOIP) as well as the Eclectic paradigm of international production it would be possible to evaluate stages of South Korean IDP as well as discover certain characteristics of national economic policy under the influence of natural assets on the basis of previous research concerning aforementioned topics. During more than a 60-year period of national economic development the Republic of Korea (ROK) has experienced 3 from five stages of IDP and stepped towards the 4th stage which implies growing prevalence of country’s ‘export’ of direct investment over foreign equity ‘import’. In addition, both foreign and outward direct investment has overcome structural evolution. Yet certain characteristics of natural assets, economic policy and local market affect trajectory of ROK’s economic development as well as local and foreign MNEs’ behaviour. Keywords: Investment development path stages of ROK, the Eclectic paradigm, outward direct investment, inward direct investment, gross national product, OLI specific advantages
