Due to rapid technological progress, there is an increasing shift towards online and digital services. Notions such as "branchless banking", "crowdfunding" or "crypt currency" are gaining momentum and putting pressure on traditional banks. Digitalization is emerging on the agenda of bank top managers: resources in free money are often scarce and it is important for management to know how investments pay off in financial markets. This paper clearly demonstrates that in developed countries, high levels of digitalization have a positive impact on the demand for bank services, using the example of banks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) from 2012 to 2019. The study contributes to an understanding of digitalization and the bank's performance in times of technological change. In other words, whether banks need to take advantage of the technological opportunities that digitalization offers, stay ahead of the competition and take risks.
