Women and Gender Roles in 21st Century Japanese Cinema

More than one hundred years ago Raicho Hiratsuka wrote, “In the beginning, woman was the sun”. It was a big step confronting traditional society with strict gender roles, which were shaped by cultural and religious aspects through various periods of history of Japan. Since then due to social and economic reasons the perception and status of women has changed. In this research we aim to examine the image of woman in contemporary Japanese cinema in terms of gender roles and changing tendencies.
