The importance of smart city construction has increased in recent years due to heightening level of urbanization and the appearance of new global challenges. However, some questions regarding the implementation side, specifically, smart city business-models and financing remain largely uncovered in academic literature. Thus, the purpose of the study is to analyse the existing smart business-models, ways of financing and discover the European Union experience regarding smart city implementation and based on that to formulate recommendations on how to foster smart city development. To do so a multi-method research design will be employed, including content analysis, literature reviewing, classification and case studies. This study may be of use to researchers, policy-makers and businesses interested in smart city construction.
