The paper is devoted to the study of such a topical issue as the investment climate and investment problems in Western China. The relevance is confirmed both by the fact that it is through the western region of China that the main transport routes of the Belt and Road initiative pass, and by the fact that social instability in the region can affect the implementation of this initiative. The main problems that may affect the volume of foreign direct investment in the region, and how China pursues a policy aimed at improving the situation in the region as a whole, are examined. In order to provide predictive assessments of the development of the investment climate in the region, an analysis of the attractiveness of the region for foreign direct investment was carried out in the context of the “Belt and Way” initiative and the “Great Development of the West” policy. Based on the SWOT analysis conducted by the author, recommendations are proposed for solving problems that impede the attraction of more investment in Western China.
