Higuchi Ichiyo's prose (1872-1896): relevant topics, system of characters, stylistic issues

Higuchi Ichiyo, whose works the study is dedicated to, was one of the first representatives of the female intellectual elite, recognized by Japanese society in the late 19th century. In this study, we will analyze three most famous works of Higuchi Ichiyo – “The Thirteenth Night”, “Child’s Play” and “Troubled Waters”. The main task is the research of the image of womanhood and the woman that Ichiyo presented in her stories. To achieve the goal, we will analyze the novels and define the personality characteristics of the main characters. Based on this material, personality traits of the main characters of the stories will be specified in order to determine the position of women in Japanese society in the Meiji era in the context of Higuchi Ichiyo’s works.
