More than a quarter of the Russian population lives in rural areas, where the social and economic structure differs significantly from the urban one. However, there is a gap in knowledge of “moral economics” that rural structures are based on. The peasant economics depends on many criteria including the structure and policy of local authority. The study is aimed to identify the factors that determine the local communities and individual economic practices in the rural area. The work is based on field materials collected in the villages of Primorsky Krai, the Altai Republic, and the Udmurt Republic. Qualitative data collection methods were used: semi-structured interviews and observations. The pool of informants consists of 89 people who were found and interviewed in their places of residence. The study provides recommendations to state and municipal authorities on adaptation to the geographical and economic characteristics of rural areas.
