Information systems are wide spread in the modern business industry. It is necessary to choose the software consciously. This is especially true for small organisations. While for large companies failure in the project that is dedicated to integrating the new IT solution will not entail serious problems, the situation in the field of small business is opposite. In the course of the work the key characteristics of the small business sphere were investigated, types of modern information systems was described, and their possible selection criteria were studied. Based on the information that was collected, a unique technique was developed. That technique allows representatives of small and micro-companies to choose the most appropriate information system for their internal organizational environment, which will allow partial automation of production processes and will satisfy the current needs of the business.
