Ironical Litanies in Contemporary Russian Pop Music

Drawing on the published researches of women`s music, gender and irony, this work explains what performative strategies are used by female pop singer Monetochka in contemporary Russia. I have chosen the term “litanies” to mark a special type of speaking about sufferings and the word “ironical” in order to show the performativity of such self-expression in pop music. Therefore, this research considers the analysis of patterns connected with litanies in the Monetochka`s musical art. Also, it contains the analysis of contemporary musical scene in Russia connected with the genre of litany. All in all, I am going to demonstrate how Monetochka build a specific image of herself and how it relates to ironical litanies. In the end I will include her case into a more general context and find out how her performative strategies work within popular music in Russia.
