In recent years, the document-oriented data model has become increasingly popular. Application developers use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) to store schemaless data. Ability to store and manipulate JSON values has became an important aspect to consider when selecting a database. In 2017, due to the popular demand from developers, SQL standard was extended with functionality to work with JSON values. Yandex Database (YDB) is a distributed fault-tolerant NewSQL database with strict consistency guarantees and ACID transactions. In this work we have extended YDB’s query language with JSON values manipulation functionality according to the SQL standard. We have implemented JSON_EXISTS, JSON_VALUE and JSON_QUERY functions with full support of the query language for JSON values described in the standard — JsonPath.
