The period of 1830s-1840s was, in many ways, decisive for the United States. It saw an unfolding of the Mexican-American war and a largest acquisition of land in the nation’s history in a result of it. Before it, these lands had to be explored and survived to inform both the government and the public. However, while the events preceding this war are well-researched, the conclusive answer whether the US government played a role in these events, and how much information it had on these lands, was not given. The aim of this study is to explore the place of the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers in the context of the US foreign policy. This paper argues that its creation and actions had a profound effect on the US politics.
